Well, surprise, I was DIVING today :-). Well, actually I was in the morning being trained in how to teach in skills. Jade and I (two of the 'students') were practicing our training skills with some of the skills that we will be able to teach after the education: E.g. mask flooding and clearing, regulator recovery and equipment assembly. When we finish our Dive Con education, we will most likely take (already certified) divers on so-called 'refresher' courses (if a diver has e.g. not dived for a year or more), and then we need to refresh their basic skills (and when we finish we may even be paid for this :-).
In the afternoon, I was assisting an already 'graduated' Dive Master (he is also called Christian and he is the reason why I am called 'Kraft'). He had 6 refresher 'students' (which is quite a lot!). It was his first ever refresher course, and we went to a place were he never dived before. So yesterday evening he was asking me if I could assist him - and of course! I would surely personally appreciate if someone would assist on MY first refresher course; especially if with 6 students and in an area I don't know :-)
I still love 'the diving itself' very much, but the assisting and 'instructing' part is actually much more fun than I thought. I thought that becoming a Dive Master (or rather Dive Con) is just a way to get paid for all your diving, but the instruction part IS actually quite fun. What I like most is the transition of people from being quite scared and cautious and into loving the feeling of basically 'flying' in the water (agreed, not all students get it right away, but everyone learns, and they learn fast!). So the cool thing about instruction (assisting) is to see the reaction on people when they first time try diving, when they first time feel in control where they are in water, when they come up with a super-happy face etc. Or when people who have not dived for a long time realise that it is almost like bicycling; if you learned it once, it will quickly come back to you.
Another great day at Koh Tao.
