Things go fast these days; today I passed my teaching of Open Water Presentation skills. I got the following skills: Recovery of regulator , Emergency Swimming Ascent (tricky one to teach), and hovering ('flying' around 1 meter above the buttom with crossed legs). I had to first do a briefing of these skills on the surface, then teach these skills in open water and afterwards give feedback. The teaching was done to two instructors. When underwater I first show how to do the skill correctly, and then I go to each person and let them have a go on the skill. And since our 'students' were instructors, they of course did a lot of things wrong deliberately; to make the situation more realistic as with divers who have not been diving for some time (or as with novice divers). And I was then supposed to notice if they mistakes they did, tell them how to do it rigth (under water of course), and ask them to re-do it. I think I caught all mistakes they did. They typically each did 2 or more mistakes for each skill, some very obvious like spitting out the regulator from the mouth, but also several subtle ones (like holding breath, and to see this it requires that you (also) monitor if bubbles come out once in a while. And there are very many other things to look after). But I think I did quite well. And I passed :-)
So now almost exactly one month after I officially started my Dive Con education, I am basically only missing 3-4 things before I am done with my first education; the Dive Con. However, the next three days I will assist on my second Open Water Course (actually, it is required to only assist a single Open Water Course, but at Big Blue they really like to assist at least two. In general, the standards at Big Blue are much higher than in most other places. Even the Open Water Course and the Advanced Course (which I both have assisted here) are much more thorough than what I experienced myself when I did these courses. And the same goes for us Dive Professionals; Big Blue really want us to come out as professionals, and not as amateurs that just barely did all we had to do. And since I am in no hurry, and since I love assisting Open Water students, I will happily use the next three days on assisting :-).
Next thing to sign off will be on Sunday, where I can get 1 or 2 more things I need to do out of the way. I somehow feel that I just got here (but I have been here for 1.5 month), and suddenly it seems like I am getting very close to finish. Now the big question is: What then? Well, I take one day at a time, and I have promised myself not to do too much planning on this 'odyssey', so we will see :-). Maybe I continue becoming an instructor? Maybe I use a month leading divers here? Maybe I move on? At least right now, I don't feel like moving on just yet, but again: Let's see.
