Today I tried to repair my 6 months old Nokia N900 phone. For 2 months it has been very difficult to accept a charger. I have bought 2 new chargers, but they worked only 1 month each. At the end, only a USB cable connected to my PC worked as a charger.
And finally 3 days ago, when I pulled out the USB cable from the phone, the entire connector inside the Nokia N900 was so loose that it came out of the device. Now I use a piece of tape just to avoid the connector to fall out (see photo).
Looking for a repair on a small island in Thailand is almost impossible, but I rented a motobike and found a place where they repair phones. But this one was a too big mouthful for him. He gave up after half an hour. Another (or rather THE other shop) was willing to send it to Bangkok for repair for a couple of hundreds of Euros.
Buying a new phone is not an option on my budget, so I asked him for alternative solutions, and on the attached photo you see my newest (and third) extra charger I buy for this phone. Elegant? No. But it works.
This stupid Nokia N900 micro-USB charging connector has now cost me around 100 Euro by buying 3 extra chargers, motobike rental, repair etc. Why on earth does the N900 not use a standard (and much cheaper and easier to find) charger? And why is the connector so badly manufactured that it breaks after only 4-6 months of normal use?
I am puzzled.
Other photos are from the beach last night.
